HYROX: Global brand at a local level
In Calgary’s Bridgeland neighbourhood, in a space with monkey bars, sleds and ropes, lies something powerful: a community where physical strength and mental toughness are built side by side.
Whether you're training for a Spartan race, supporting your mental health, or simply looking to move through everyday life with more ease, COR.Fit offers the tools — and the people — to get you there.
At the core of it all are owners Sean and Kathy Sweeney, whose balance of passion and structure shapes not only the workouts, but the supportive culture that keeps members coming back. Their “low-skill, high-output” training philosophy ensures that everyone feels welcomed, challenged, and capable — no matter their starting point.
“Our entire ethos is being able to provide a safe space where everybody can really challenge their own limits,” said Sean.
Inside the massive Bridgeland training facility, that ethos comes to life. The space is built like a playground for adults, featuring obstacles you’d find in Spartan races — from monkey bars and climbing ropes to sled pushes and wall climbs — alongside functional training zones designed for strength, conditioning, and mobility.
Sean and Kathy are, quite literally, walking advertisements for their own philosophy. Both lifelong competitors, they’ve raced in obstacle course events, Hyrox competitions, and endurance challenges as individuals and as a couple — proving that the community they’ve built is rooted in their own pursuit of pushing limits.
Since taking over the gym in 2019, Sean and Kathy have navigated the ups and downs of business ownership — including the abrupt onset of COVID-19 just six months into their journey.
“It’s a lot of paperwork, a lot of planning, and a lot of vision,” Kathy notes.
That vision laid the foundation for the inclusive, community-driven space COR.Fit is known for today — a space where members don’t just work out, they grow together.
For brothers John and Eric Wiehler, COR.Fit has become more than just a gym — it's something they now share side by side.
“Fun, challenging, and beneficial,” is how Eric describes it. He joined over a year ago to improve his health and stayed because of the impact it had on his mental wellness, his connection with his kids, and the people he trains with.
John, a long-time member, was originally drawn in to find a safe, gymnastics-style program for his son, James. But it wasn’t long before he joined the classes himself.
“I like the feeling of being part of a team,” John says.
What kept him coming back wasn’t just the workout — it was the structure, the patience, and the camaraderie from day one.
“We hold each other accountable for making sure that we're putting out our near maximum effort,” he adds.
The sense of connection and shared commitment was so impactful the brothers extended the experience to their team at Wiehler Mechanical, recognizing how powerful COR.Fit’s model for physical and mental wellbeing in the workplace.
Pushing boundaries is part of COR.Fit’s DNA. As the first gym to bring Hyrox to Western Canada, they’ve led the charge in introducing accessible, high-intensity competition to everyday fitness enthusiasts creating space for people to test their limits without needing to be elite.
It’s just another way Sean and Kathy show that in Calgary’s fitness community, they’re not only raising the bar — they’re building it.
